It is just another drizzly Portland morning at the bike shop that makes it awesome. What I thought was just another day here quickly changed when we sold a Globe Carmel 3 and the day rocketed into a new dimension. Seeing things that weren't there and smiles all around. Laughter filled the air and this day was as nice as sun pouring through the windows and lifting the mood. The weather didn't matter because everyone was totally stoked. It is all down hill from here.

So this is how my summer has been going. Truly in the last three days two big boxes of doughnuts haves showed up at the shop. Being that the majority of our employees are vegan and that 100% of the recent doughnut haul has had some sort of animal ancestry it has been left up to Nick and I to take down these beasts. Except Nick wasn't working when the last batch landed in the shop, and then there was one. Doughnuts as we all know are best when fresh so rather than allow these fried sugar delights depreciate in culinary value it was up to me to take care of the first box. Remember there is a reason why day old doughnuts are so cheap, its because they are tired. Thanks to an end of June summer sunshine fest I was able to justify this surprise jump in fried food intake. That and a complete disregard for the future of my health. I am not trying to scare off the doughnut angels out there, I applaud you and more than anything I would like to be able to share my doughnut eating experience with the whole of my cohort. If you are thinking, "Damn that 21st Avenue Bicycles is so G.D. Rad I want to bring them in some doughnuts" please do just make sure you go vegan, because most of us are trying to do our part. K

It is another day here at the shop and we are always thinking about awesome bike component, reusing materials, and making dreams come true. This last week I made two of those come true when making the Chris King display. I was able to reuse an pedal display that we had around and the Chris King components speak for themselves. If you don't know why they are so amazing feel free to ask us or check out chrisking.com. It is all about precision in the end and having parts that will last for years to come.

The precision doesn't stop there for us either. Below are some of my favorite tools in the shop and when used correctly will build a wheel that will last too.

With the King hubs, Phil Wood spoke cutting machine, and Park Tool truing stand we can make an amazing wheelset you will be riding on and make you smile.

"Lock It Up" Sale

A long time ago in the bike shop that is related to this blog there was a friend that explained the term "lock it up" to us and now we can't get enough of the term. You may think that since we are a bike shop we are talking about securing your bicycle with a Kyptonite U-Lock but I am afraid that that is not it. Locking up is all about looking your best and matching while on or off the bike. This image will give you an idea of what I am talking about.

You may wonder why someone would do this and I know Paul Mitchell has the answer. "If you look good, you feel good." I feel that hits the nail on the head and straight though the block of wood blowing it it millions of splinters. Need I say more!

So for the whole month of June we are having the "lock it up" sale. I get stopped on the street several times a day by concerned citizens asking me, "what the heck do you guys do with the old tires and bike parts when the customers no longer have a use for them? Do you throw it in a landfill?" The answer is: No, just because these tires and parts are not longer useful for cycling doesn't mean that they are trash. That's where Julian Jaborska come in. SHOUT OUT

Yes May! So here we are May 3rd and the rains are still coming down furiously. Last night a potent rain wind combo woke me from my slumber around 3:31am. Its cool because I have felt like I have been going into work on Mondays with too much energy. It is true that here in Portland we don't really start counting on sunny days until after the 4th of July. Still the days are getting longer and the sun breaks we are looking for seem to be happening with increased frequency. Last weekend we all went out on our bikes, road riding, city riding, mountain riding, we do it all here at the shop. We hope you too had a wonderful weekend.

Being that the days are getting longer and we hope that more people are going to be out riding their bikes we want to help ensure that you will continue to ride your bikes. So for the month of May we are going to have all of our in-store helmets marked 10% off or more. Ok we know that helmets don't visually add to your head the way a nice pair of sunglasses or well trimmed goat tee might but in the end the helmet may be the most fashionable accessory you could own, you know because thinking is very attractive. In addition, the more people we get wearing helmets this less self conscious we will all feel, think about it, its like in primordial times when people first started having noses, at some point we hit a tipping point and then everyone had one, right? So do your head and your future a favor, pick up a helmet, lets get to that tipping point and it just so happens that we have some of them on sale.

We just got one of Knog's multi tools in the shop to test out and see what we think. Atlin is going to throw it in his tool bag, mash, and use this tool when needed. I hear Sean in the back telling Atlin he should try to assemble a bike with it. You won't be able to trim cables, but that ain't no thing. He'll keep you posted.

21st Avenue Bicycles Logo Design Challenge

Old Logo: not so fresh.

21st Avenue Bicycles wants a new logo; it is time for something fresh. We are calling on designers and artists in our community to help us come up with something that will be featured in our advertisements, on our website, and will be used as a sticker on every bicycle sold through the shop. Needless to say we hope the winning design will have a ton of exposure. We would not expect you to do this for free; we are going to give the winning designer $100.00, a chrome laptop sleeve, and 10% off everything in the store for the life of the logo. In addition we are interested developing relationships with artists and designers for future collaborative projects.
We want something that looks both retro and modern, with a focus on clean lines and color selection. Icons we have thought about include Mt Hood, Roses, the Columbia Gorge, one of Portland’s Bridges, Fausto Coppi, Vintage Car Racing, Jean Vuarnet to name a few. The logo needs to be visible as a small graphic, something like the size of a 50 cent piece as this will be the size of our bicycle frame stickers. The shape of the graphic is not limited to a circle but all elements need to be visible with inside a 2” by 2” square.

Some of you may know that I (Amanda) got a sweet sponsorship from Tonic Fab, which I am super stoked about, and last night I was asked to join Team Hankbuilt and I accepted. I Love Oregon: the McKenzie River Trail

Lindo and I (Amanda) took a three day trip to the McKenzie River Trail this last weekend. It was my first time, but not my last. We parked right by the trail and just camped out of the Tahoe. It was magic. I had a lot of fun and learned that you can't have someone else crack your back while lying down. We tried.... 3 times.

Answer, no one. Jeremy Dunn, the main man at Embrocation Cycling Journal and the corporate outreach merry maker for Rapha USA , is throwing a party to celebrate the release of Embrocation Volume 5. To help us all feel a little bit of the excitement he feels when he puts out an issue of these babies he has put together a little contest. For the 2009 SSCXWC Jeremy road a custom Raleigh, Shimano equipped cross bike, this is the grand prize for the contest. Myles' new Signal

Why is Married Kyle and the rest of us so sad? Well, in the picture you will notice the absence of the world's greatest mustache. I was SO bummed out when I got to work and saw it was gone. Every time I would look over at Kyle when he had his mustache I would smile. Now, every time I look at him I want to punch something. Don't worry customer you are safe, but if you are a cardboard box watch your back.

Park's forced smile

This is Park. He's our boss. He belongs to Kato. I would've posted pictures of him before, but he moves quickly like a gazel and it is hard to capture him on film or in this case digi. Now, we are all caught up. Above is his first (and a tad bit early) attempt to settle into his Spring/Summer attire. I thought that once he made the transition into flipity flops there was no going back. I guess that's not the case. If you see him on the street make sure you stop him and give him a super firm handshake. Don't break eye contact and if he trys to let go squeeze a little harder. He'll really like that. Again, his name is Park and in a couple weeks he should be wearing shorts and flip flops. Look for him.
